The History of the School
Shu Guang Elementary School is a Catholic school that was founded in September, 1961 by Monsignor Eugene Fahey, a Jesuit from the United States. He initially asked the Holy Spirit Sisters to assist at the school, then in 1964 the running of the school was fully transferred to the sisters.
The Holy Spirit Sisters are guided by the spirit of Jesus’ love for children, and a commitment to service and nurturing students.
Principals
The school’s first principal was Sister Yao Ching-Ju, the principal of Shu Guang Girls’ High School, and she held the two positions concurrently. In 1974, Sister Yao stepped down and Sister Chang Tsui-Wen became principal of Shu Guang Elementary School. When Sister Chang reached retirement age in 1989, the board of directors appointed Sister Lin Chi to be principal. From 2001, Ms. Huang Yu-Mei served as the principal until she retired in 2016 and Ms. Lin Ling-Feng became principal.
Educational Philosophy
The school focuses on balanced development of the five dimensions of education, nurturing students’ character as well as teaching diverse approaches to learning; fostering students’ love of life and joyful growth; and helping them discover what they shine at and their potential through learning.
They chose “Truth, Goodness, and Beauty” as the school’s motto and they work to teach and guide their young students to be sincere and uphold truth, to learn about beauty and goodness, and to grow through cooperative learning. The school currently has 18 classes, 808 students, and 42 teaching and other staff members.
